THE IRISH
Hoppé’s 1926 and 1937 studies of Ireland capture a recently fragmented country, with the Republic of Ireland formed in 1919, and Northern Ireland remaining in the United Kingdom. He toured the entire island, north and south. It had difficult century of internal conflict and economic struggle. The ambiguity of the nation and its people are seen in the faces Hoppé photographed, ranging from joyous sports and jolly partying at the pub to the prematurely weary faces of young people facing a lifetime of harsh physical labor.
The Irish are as delightful as they are intriguing. Kindly, hospitable, courteous and easy-going, an undercurrent of realism rises to the surface in rather a startling manner.
