Clouds, Milford Sound, 1930

NEW ZEALAND

Part of his epic, unprecedented 1929-1930 Southern Hemisphere adventures, Hoppé captured the soaring mountains in Milford Sound, bubbling volcanic hot springs and mud pots, and hiked over dangerous, ragged glaciers. He also met the indigenous Maori people, and photographed their traditional dwellings and artworks.

How can I describe the awe which fills me when I look at the scene spread out before me. I have nothing to compare the extravagant canvas which nature has painted here, with anything I have ever seen. It is unique."

– E.O. Hoppé
