LITERARY FIGURES

As a passionate fan of literature, as well as being a writer himself, Hoppé had a particular enthusiasm and facility in photographing writers. As people who are not usually in the limelight, and whose creative work is made quietly and privately, writers could be notoriously difficult sitters. Hoppé, however, was usually able to bring them out of their shells, find common interests, and create a spark that could reveal a character story to his camera.

I often noticed that well known writers usually talk less well than one would expect them to do judging by the vividness and vigour with which they express themselves in their work.

– E.O. Hoppé
