UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Born and raised in Germany and a naturalized citizen of Britain, exploring and photographing the vast expanse of the United States was a grand, romantic adventure for Hoppé. It was often an utterly alien landscape, unlike anything he would have ever seen in Europe. He visited smoky industrial east-coast cities, Hollywood film studios, and remote Native American villages in the Southwest. His portraits of the nation’s people show the quiet dignity of both the land’s original inhabitants, and the newer arrivals building new lives and new technologies in the vast land.

My task was to discover the real America, at that time unfamiliar to so many people, even Americans.

– E.O. Hoppé
