Hoppé spent nearly a year traversing and documenting “The Fifth Continent.” He photographed the architectural wonder of the Sydney Harbour Bridge under construction, the glamorous recreation antics of Sydney denizens at Bondi Beach, the stark landscape of the Outback, grizzled desert opal miners (including a sole woman), Aboriginal peoples and their tribal traditions, and luscious forests that were increasingly being exploited for lumber, much to Hoppé’s distress.
