Hoppé saw his home country of Germany become the center of two world wars during his lifetime. In spite of emigrating to Britain, he visited often and retained an affection for the country’s quaint medieval charm, much of which was soon destroyed by the bombs of World War II. During the 1920s, Hoppé became fascinated by the new factories and industries that rose during the Weimar Republic, and he photographed them with incredible artistry. The gradual rise of Nazis, which eventually was to shatter the nation he loved, was also shown with concern in his images of his former home.
