GREAT BRITAIN

Hoppé embraced the sometimes contradictory nature of Britain as a and a land of deep history, heritage and nostalgia, but it was simultaneously a cosmopolitan culture and center of technological progress. Tranquil landscapes, rural villages and ancient towns could be contrasted with the factories, smokestacks and electrical lighting of a modern age. Yet each image was a valid representation of early twentieth century Britain through Hoppé’s eyes.

I found the character of the British Isles so definitely linked up with their erratic climate that it was necessary to record all moods if a true canvas was to be painted.

– E.O. Hoppé
