In mid-to-late 1929, Hoppé visited a rapidly changing Indian region that was ready to demand independence from the British Empire. The Indian National Congress would pass a resolution to that effect that very December. Hoppé recorded the great diversity and ancient heritage of the country, its peoples and varied religious and cultural traditions, Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, Sikh and Jewish. He photographed it from bottom to top, enduring many hardships, ranging from Colombo, Sri Lanka to Rabindranath Tagore’s university at Santiniketan in Bengal, and even a glimpse at Mount Everest from Darjeeling.
