INDONESIA

In the islands of Indonesia, which included Bali, Java and Sumatra, Hoppé documented the indigenous peoples and found that their traditions, including clothing, technology, crafts and ceremonies, from weddings to funerals, were still largely uncontaminated by encroaching modernity.

To attempt to pose a people like the Balinese whose exquisite bodies possess a quality which belongs to pure sculpture would have been criminal. All I could do was to study their graceful movements and photograph them at the appropriate moment.

– E.O. Hoppé
