E.O. Hoppé’s Amerika: The First Great American Road Trip

E.O. Hoppé’s Amerika: The First Great American Road Trip presents never-before-seen masterworks recently uncovered from the E.O. Hoppé Estate Collection archive, managed by Curatorial Assistance in Old Town Pasadena. This visionary work was the first to survey America at a unique time in its history, anticipating the road trips of other photographers such as Edward Weston and Walker Evans in the late 1930s, and Robert Frank in the mid-1950s.

Follow Hoppé’s transcontinental journey from urban New York to the “steel city” of Pittsburgh, Detroit’s burgeoning industrial factories to Florida’s palms, remnants of the antebellum South to the pueblos of Arizona and New Mexico, and Yosemite’s majesty to Hollywood’s allure. Hoppé’s insightful portrait of the United States is a revelation of diversity that ruminates on the country’s past, present, and future.

The exhibition will feature a selection of vintage prints, modern prints from original negatives, and related ephemera, providing a rare glimpse into the archive of this preeminent German-born British Photo-Modernist.
